The Missing Track On Renaissance's First Album
The self-titled debut album by Renaissance has 5 tracks. Two on side A: 'Kings and Queens', and 'Innocence'. Three on side B: 'Island', 'Wanderer', and 'Bullet'. When the album came to CD, it was often released with two bonus tracks: an edit of Island meant for the radio as a single, and the B-side of that single; a song called 'The Sea'. It's a pretty song, and I decided to try an experiment with it. I listened to the album, but with The Sea between Innocence and Island. The results? It fits very well. So well in fact, that I now believe it may have originally been intended to be on the album.
The Evidence
Ok, hear me out. I have a few reasons why The Sea being included in that spot makes sense purely based on listening.- Makes both sides have three tracks.
- Makes both sides nearly equal in length, whereas before side B was longer by a few minutes.
- The Sea fades out. That means that side A now fades out, and Island, the beginning of side B *fades in*. Innocence does not fade out, so when The Sea is included, the transition from side A to B is much smoother.
- Thematically, The Sea fits right before Island. Get it? An island surrounded by the sea? Ok, I admit that's a stretch, but what are the opening lyrics of Island? "There is Island where it should never be, surrounded by suburban SEA."
What is this? This is a cover of a rare cassette version of the album released in the U.K. in 1969 or 1970. And if you look closely, you can see that on side one of this cassette is The Sea right where I said it would be. So we can confirm, The Sea was on a release of the album in 1970.

Wow! Now there's a revelation. All very interesting. Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteYes a great find!
DeleteThat's nice to put it up but it's been from the 2 CD Renaissance Title -'Innocents & Illusions' w/ both LPs & Bonus Trx 'Island' (single edit) & 'The Sea'; on the 2nd 'Illusion' LP by Renaissance Bonus Trx are 4: 'Shining Where The Sun Has Been', 'All The Falling Angels', 'Prayer For Light ' & 'Walking Away'.(2004)
DeleteThe simple reason why it's not a mathematical equation of 3+3/side is TIME. I highly recommend (& I'll never forget Jim's face when he saw the 'Shoot' LP in the stack of non-Y'birds Titles on May 8, 02 in a British Pub-themed club in Campbell, CA). He saw that & looked at me to say 'You Like this Genre/ 'sub'-Genre {I call it 'Classical Rock'}‽'
DeleteI said I LOVE this Music & I find it in used bins, give it to Friends & they All Love it!
My point is - putting the 'Shoot' LP between the Renaissance & Illusion LPs is more a missing link than any 'failure' to Chart. It fits in perfectly! Right after the 'Illusion' LP by Renaissance & Illusion's 'Out Of The Mist'! One can lead a horse TO water... Dave Dillon
>>Btw-I don't think I'm going to be alone re the observation of some similarities between parts of the 2nd Renaissance LP 'Illusion' & Armageddon- Keith's last Release with top Production, Lyrical input & working on Musics (plural) with his great Partner in Music & having lots of good time in London, The Mohave Desert & more places far & wide (many more I'm sure) & so probably well covered in Louis' own, & Newly available, Autobiography which is out NOW & going to fit very nicely w/ the Newly Remastered LP from '75 'Armageddon' & totally apropos for its 50th Anniversary by DEKO Entertainment after they did remastering & so brought that LP up to current state of Sonic virtues high, mid & low.
DeleteAt DEKO Entertainment,
Contact Pete M for presale details by the Manufacturing Distributor & newest '75-'25 Armageddon LP's Production virtues if not Louis Cennamo (on Fbook &/or IG) re all details on how to acquire each of His Autobiography &/or the rerelease of that great Armageddon album on its 50th Anniversary.
My point started with the mention or thought of the 'Shoot' LP by Jim McCarty & another Group of warm, Fine Players working that same vein of Gold as Renaissance just before 'Shoot' as Keith Relf & Louis Cennamo went on to another direction re Steamhammer's 'Speech' LP from the same year as 'Shoot' in '72. Ah, Fruition! Each doing well as the other Yardbirds' Members did what was of interest to each One & One for all. As Chris Dreja was into Photography his work is seen on the back of the 1st Led Zepellin album & Renaissance releases & more than I can focus on in that same Family of Talent & Warmth as Mutualism is a great thing. The 'Shoot' LP in itself is the missing link for Renaissance>('Shoot')> 'Illusion' the Band minus Keith as is well & sadly known for the 1st LP 'Out Of The Mist'. Shoot fits perfectly & it amazes me that more weren't aware of that connection between Renaissance & Illusion the Reunion of Renaissance w/a few New additions to strengthen the Lineup allowing Jim McCarty to take over the Male Co-Lead Vocals with Jane's soaring beautiful Tone. Fruition.

There are some 33 Trx on 'The Jane Relf Collection' & I think it has everything She's ever helped w/ Her nice, Sotto Voce full of Warmth, Love & that unique Range of Tone she's agilely applied to all the Renaissance & Illusion material that was to benefit from her touch.
